OS Grid Ref: ST 315 599- Landranger: 182 - Multimap Link
Height ASL: 0 metres - CAA Limit: 60 metres
Location: North Somerset coast
Directions: Leave M5 southbound at Jct 21, follow the signs for the town centre. Then follow the signs for the beach and keep it to your right.
Uphill is sign posted at the junction on bend in the road (turn right). If you make it as far as the roundabout, head for (turn Right) and drive PAST the general hospital, right at small roundabout, first left and follow the (narrow) road for 1/2 mile.
Parking: Parking available actually on the beach.
Beware, in the winter months parking is free but as soon as the spring/summer season starts they start charging.
Large sign adjacent to beach entrance lists charges. Free if you use the UPHILL entrance to the beach at the side of the wind zone, or £3 all day (£1.50 half day) at the Weston end - good walk/sandy drive to the wind zone too!
PLEASE NOTE - When parking check the high tide mark and DON'T park close to the waters edge.
The time of high tide is usually posted at the entrance to the beach.
Weston has the 2nd highest rise and fall of tide in the world and has claimed hundreds of vehicles.
Facilities: The town has the usual facilities. Toilets are just next to beach car park entrance.
In the summer months there is a beach tea shack where tea, coffee ice creams can be bought (when he's open!).
Tea/Coffee/Ice creams are expensive so dont expect a lot of change and dont expect fine cuisine either!!
We now have a man with a cafe trailer at the Uphill end too! He sells small kites and is about to sell lines and other spares.
Snack and drink prices are very reasonable. Toilets are also available on the road a few hundred meters from the Uphill entrance.
There is also a caravan site at the entrance to the beach! "The ship" & "The Dolphin" are close by.
Accessibility: Easy access, just drive onto the beach. The sand at the sea wall side of the beach is soft - unsuitable for wheelchairs/pushchairs, go further down the beach where the sand is more compact.
At the Uphill end, turn right onto the beach, the wind zone is just a few metres from the road. Disabled toilets are next to the beach entrance
Flying Area: The Beach. Large open area, suitable for all kite activities. However it is a general rule of thumb that buggying is restricted to the south end of the beach (the Uphill end) which keeps the buggys away from the more populated areas of the beach.
Sport kiting is usually carried out at the town end of the beach The buggy area is de-marked by posts on three sides and water on the fourth. Take care, especially at high tide, the posts are closer than you think! Using buggies, boards etc. outside the wind zone will get you a visit from the beach wardens! Best winds are West North West off the sea.
Comments: In the summer months dogs are not permitted on the town end of the beach. You may walk dogs on the rest of the beach but please clear up any mess they might leave! Bins for this purpose are clearly marked.
If you are visiting with the kids please keep in mind that the sea goes a long way out. It is not advisable for the kids to walk out to meet the tide. The mud below the high tide line is dangerous. It is very easy to get stuck in the mud and the tide comes in quickly. Every year we advise people not to do this and every year the coastguard is called out to rescue people from the mud.
Always be wary of walkers, runners, dogs, horses etc. passing through the wind zone. The sand is firmer there and so makes a more attractive surface for both two and four legged pedestrians
Enjoy your visit but please be safe. - Head for the Church on the hill - worth a look
If you have any questions about the town, beach or the facilities please ask one of the beach wardens who will be only too pleased to help.
