Location: Ancient road known as "The Portway" running parallel and to the West of A49(T)
Directions: 1) A49(T) North to junc A489, follow to village of Plowden, turn right to Asterton, right again along The Portway.
2) A49(T) north to Church Stretton. Left over railway into village. Cross B4370 and bear right up Burway Hill. Road splits 3 ways at top. Take any one to reach T junc with The Portway
3) As 2) above but turn right onto B4370 and left into Carding Mill Valley, park and continue walking in same direction.
Parking: 1) & 2) provide roadside parking, 3) large car park
Facilities: Toilets, Information Centre & shop in season, at 3) otherwise none closer than Church Stretton.
Accessibility: 1) & 2) are not for the faint hearted. They provide spectacular views of the valleys several hundred feet below the single track, unfenced, road you are on with your wheels only inches from the edge.
NOT RECOMMENDED FOR WINTER DRIVING.
3) is the easy option, but be prepared for a fairly steep uphill walk of about half an hour.
Flying Area: Open moorland
Comments: Even in the height of summer you may not see another living soul other than sheep.
Be aware,though, that there is a gliding club and a golf course within the area.
