Kite Flying Site Report  ~ Back to UK Summary

Site Name: Hilton Hotel Field

County: Hampshire PO6

Nearest Place: Farlington

Also Near: Shell Garage, Farlington Marshes (Nature Reserve), Motorway Slip

OS Grid Ref: SU677046 - Landranger: 196 -  Multimap Link

Height ASL: 1 metres - CAA Limit: 60 metres

Location: Located behind the Hilton Roundabout in Farlington, just north of Portsea Island (Portsmouth).
Entry found behind the Shell garage on the southbound carriageway of the Eastern Road.

Directions: From Portsmouth: Go north up Eastern Road and straight over the roundabout at Farlington Marshes, straight after (outside Perrys car showroom) get into the right hand slip lane and turn towards Shell garage. Proceed into unpaved car park next to Hilton.
From A3(M): Follow A3(M) 'til it merges with A27 at Bedhampton. Follow A27 in left hand lane and take the first turn off with Farlington Marshes on your left. Turn right at the roundabout at the bottom of the sliproad. Continue as above (from Perrys showroom).
From A27 (from the East): After the A3(M) turn off, bear left. Look out for the marshes on your left as an indication of when to leave the A27. Signs will show Portsmouth at this junction. Turn right at the roundabout at the bottom of the sliproad. Continue as above (from Perrys showroom).
From M27 (from the West): Follow the M27 to the end, where it becomes the A27 (J12). Take the first junction after the A27 begins. Turn left at the roundabout at the bottom of the sliproad. Continue as above (from Perrys showroom).

Parking: Plenty of free parking, 24 x 7, right next to flying site.

Facilities: Toilets and refreshments available in Shell garage. Sainsburys very nearby (easily visible from field, although train tracks intervene).
Not much shelter, or seating on actual field. Bar and cooked food available very nearby in Hilton Hotel.

Accessibility: Very good. Parking next to field with no steps, etc. There is a road that leads to far end of the field, but this is sometimes locked.

Flying Area: Very large flat grassy flying area. There are three large trees in the field, and the field is surrounded by low(ish) trees. Wind is still usually pretty clean as long as you move away from the edges. Sometimes you have to share with cricketers and footballers and dog-walkers, but with so much room I've never felt cramped there.
