Kite Flying Site Report   ~ Back to UK Summary

Site Name: Marazion / Long Rock

County: Cornwall

Nearest Place: Marazion village

Also Near: St Michaels Mount and Mounts Bay. Penzance 3 miles to the West.

OS Grid Ref: SW 520 308 - Landranger: 203 -  Multimap Link

Height ASL: 0 metres - CAA Limit: 60 metres

Location: The beach between Penzance and Marazion, just west of the big car park by the Station House pub
(note - not the beach car park at Marazion village itself).

Directions: About 2 miles East of Penzance, look for signs to Marazion and St Michaels Mount, along the A394 or B3280 .... then ?

Leave Penzance on A30 eastward (towards St Ives & Truro). At the big roundabout after the Heliport, take the last exit for Long Rock (also Safeway & McDonalds).
Go straight over first mini-roundabout, 1/2 mile to second mini-roundabout, then bear right (last exit) to follow the coast road towards Marazion.
Approximate 1/4 mile further on, you go over a railway bridge and the car park's on your right. If you reach Marazion itself you've gone too far.

Parking: Pay and display on sea front

Facilities: Toilets, cafe, pub

Accessibility: Excellent

Flying Area: The beach to the west of the car park (towards Penzance) is half a mile long, and remains fairly uncrowded even in peak season. Off-season there's normally no-one there.
Even at high tide there's normally around 75ft of beach between the waterline and sea wall. Plenty of wind most days.

Comments: The beach has a rather nasty layer of pebbles, and often belts of seaweed too. Mind out for windsurfers and kiteboarders, although they tend to stay to the east (towards St Michael's Mount).
Beautiful view of the Mount when you're flying in an offshore wind!

ALSO - at low tide, try the 'other' Long Rock beach, further west towards Penzance (directions as before, look for small right-hand turning 1/4 mile after first mini-roundabout, just before second-hand car sales).

Car park is right by the beach again, although it's currently closed (Sept 2001) for sea-defences repairs (alternatively you can walk along the sea wall from the other car park). It's a bit muddy, but very big and open.
